Find answers to the most common questions about TWIYO.
TWIYO is an educational and communication app for people who cannot or find speaking difficult — regardless of cause. Free: letters, counting, and preparing words with your photos. With Premium (or trial): word-image game, AAC, speller, and more. TWIYO is not a medically certified device.
TWIYO is for people who cannot or find speaking difficult — including autism, speech-language difficulties, aphasia, dyspraxia, or other causes. It is also suitable for parents, caregivers, speech therapists, and other supporters.
Yes, TWIYO is suitable for children with speech-language difficulties (SLI/TOS) and other communication challenges. It is for people who cannot or find speaking difficult, including children with SLI/TOS. Important: TWIYO is not a medically certified device and does not replace professional speech therapy or medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. We recommend coordinating use with a speech therapist or other specialist who knows the child — for example to decide which features fit the situation at home or at school.
No. TWIYO is an educational and communication app, not a medically certified device. It does not replace a professional speech device, medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment by a doctor or speech therapist. Use TWIYO as a supplement or to practice at home — not as a replacement for professional care.
You can install and use TWIYO for free for letters, counting games, and managing words (up to 25 custom words with photo and recording). The word-image game (learn + play), AAC, speller, progress, and unlimited words are Premium — start a 14-day free trial with no payment details required.
TWIYO is available in Dutch and English. You can switch between languages at any time using the language icon in the header.
Visit twiyo.app on your tablet or phone: → iPhone/iPad (Safari): tap Share → “Add to Home Screen”. → Android (Google Chrome): menu (⋮) → “Add to Home Screen” or “Install app”. Use Chrome, not Samsung Internet. → See “Unsafe app blocked”? Tap More info → Install anyway — TWIYO is safe. → Open TWIYO from your home screen icon. On Android: tap “Turn on sound” the first time.
Check these steps: → On first open: tap “Turn on sound” (browsers block audio until you tap once). → Turn up your device volume and make sure silent mode is off. → In the parent panel → “Settings” tab: make sure “Sound” is on. → Open TWIYO from your home screen icon (not only a loose browser tab) — that is most reliable. → Still no luck? Restart the app or device and try again.
Yes, mostly. Letters, counting, managing words, and (with Premium) word-image game, AAC, and your recordings work offline after the first load. Premium checks online occasionally whether your subscription is still active.
TWIYO works on any device with a modern browser: iPads, Android tablets, iPhones, Android phones, laptops, and desktops. It's optimized for tablets but works everywhere.
TWIYO updates automatically when you're online. You'll see a notification when an update is available. You don't need to do anything — no manual app store updates.
TWIYO does not sync automatically to the cloud. Use a backup file: → On the old device: open the app → gear icon (parent panel) → enter your PIN → “Settings” tab → “Download backup”. Save the .json file (email, Drive, USB — whatever works for you). → On the new device: install TWIYO, open the parent panel → “Settings” tab → “Merge backup” (recommended if you already have words) or “Replace all”. → Restore Premium separately with your Stripe email (see “Restore subscription”).
Merge: new and changed words, photos, recordings, and AAC tiles from the file are added or updated. What is already on this device stays (unless the file is newer). → Replace all: clears all local words and AAC content first, then loads only what is in the file — useful for a full reset or a new device with no local data. → Ideal for two tablets: export on tablet A, merge on tablet B, and vice versa after new changes.
For Free and Premium: no — photos, words, and recordings stay local on your device (privacy-first). Want the same content on two devices? Use merge backup in the parent panel (Settings), or export/import manually. → For organizations (day programs, care, schools), automatic cloud sync is part of the Organization package — with explicit consent for children's photos and privacy agreements (DPA). Request a quote at /professionals.
A TWIYO backup (.json) includes: → Custom words and their photos → Your audio recordings on words → AAC tiles, phonetic pronunciation, and tile order → AAC subpages (folders) and order within subpages → Day schedule (My day), per location, with photos and links → Custom images on built-in word-game tiles → Part of your app settings (language, categories, calm mode, …) → Not included: subscription status (restore Premium per device with your Stripe email), progress sessions in the database, and browser cache outside the backup.
Only if you previously downloaded a backup and still have that file. TWIYO does not store personal content on our servers — we cannot recover lost photos or words for you. Never clear browser data or remove the app before making a backup. Tip: after big changes (many new words or AAC tiles), download a backup regularly via Parent settings.
Photos, words, recordings, and progress stay on your device (IndexedDB). We do not receive that content on our servers. We do send data for specific features: search terms when picking images (Openverse/Wikipedia), text for dynamic speech (/api/tts), and for Premium subscription/login via Stripe and email OTP. See our privacy policy for details.
Your photos stay on your tablet or phone, stored locally in the browser. TWIYO does not send them to our servers or the cloud. Only you have them on that device — unless you export a backup yourself (Parent settings → Download backup) to move them to another device. If you clear the app or browser data, they are gone without a backup.
No, never. Photos you add are stored as local files on your device. They never leave your device and are not sent to any cloud or server.
You do not need an account to play and practice. To use Premium on a second device, restore a subscription, or manage billing, you can optionally sign in with your email (one-time code). Personal content (photos, words) always stays on your device.
Security: personal content (photos, words, progress) stays on your device in the browser; we do not receive it on our servers. The site uses HTTPS. Parent settings are protected by a parent lock (PIN) — change the default code right away. Payments go through Stripe securely; we do not store card details. Backups: TWIYO does not make automatic cloud backups. In Parent settings you can download a backup and merge or replace all on another device. Keep backup files safe yourself. Multiple users: on one tablet, children share the same local storage; use separate devices for separate profiles. Premium = 1 license, Family = 3 licenses at once.
Free: letters, counting, alphabet, and up to 25 custom words (manage + photo/recording). → Premium (€4.99/month · €54/year): word-image game, AAC, speller, progress, unlimited words — one device at a time. → Family (€7.99/month · €79/year): Premium for up to three devices at once, plus merge backup between devices. → Organization (from 5 licenses, quote): cloud sync, shared word packs, and admin tools for day programs, care, and education. → More details at /subscribe or /professionals.
Premium is for one tablet or phone at a time. Choose Family if you need Premium on two or three devices at once — for example at home and at school, or for two children on separate tablets. → Family (€7.99/month · €79/year) includes three simultaneous licenses in one subscription. → To share the same words across devices: use merge backup in Parent settings (Settings tab). → Subscribe: /subscribe#family
Organizations pay per active license (tablet/device), usually via annual contract and invoice in the organization's name. → Organization Start (5–10 licenses): from about €9.50 per license per month — including cloud sync, shared packs, and admin portal. E.g. 10 licenses: €95/month or €1,045/year (1 month free). → Organization Plus (11–30 licenses): lower per-seat price, plus branding and multiple admins. → From 31 licenses: custom quote. → Request a no-obligation quote at /professionals. TWIYO is not a medically certified device.
Premium belongs to your Stripe subscription, not your backup file: → Open TWIYO on the new device from the home screen icon. → Go to the parent panel (gear) → “Settings” tab. → Under “Parent account”: sign in with the email you used to pay (you receive a one-time code by email). → Then tap “Restore subscription” / “Fetch subscription” with the same email. → Not working right away? Wait a minute after payment and try again. Use the same email as in Stripe.
Each subscription has a fixed number of simultaneous licenses (seats): → Premium: 1 device at a time. → Family: 3 devices at a time. → Already at the limit? Release a license on the old device first (Parent settings → “Release license on this device”) before restoring on a new one. → Need more devices? Choose Family (/subscribe#family) or contact us for organization use.
On the device you no longer use: → Open TWIYO → parent panel (PIN) → “Settings” tab. → Scroll to “Release license on this device” and confirm. → Premium turns off on that device; the license is free to restore on another device. → On the new device: sign in with your parent account and tap “Restore subscription”.
Try this (especially on iPhone/iPad): → Open TWIYO from your home screen icon — not only Safari in the browser. Payment and the app icon sometimes do not share storage automatically. → Go to Parent settings → “Settings” tab → sign in with your Stripe email → “Restore subscription”. → Check that you use the same email as when you paid. → Still not working after a few minutes? Send a message via contact with your payment email — we will help.
Go to Parent settings (PIN) → Settings tab → Manage or cancel subscription. You will be redirected to the secure Stripe portal. A monthly plan can be cancelled every month; you keep Premium until the end of the paid month. See also /terms.
The terms of use and subscription terms are at twiyo.app/terms (also linked when you subscribe).
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. The communication board lets you tap images to form sentences that are spoken via text-to-speech. You can communicate at home with pictures — also when a professional speech device is not (yet) available.
Yes. Open the app → gear icon (parent panel) → “Words & images” tab → add a word. Take a photo with the camera, pick a file from your phone, or search for a free image. Pick a category so the word is ready for the word-image game (Premium). Photos stay on your device — never in the cloud. With Premium you can check “Also on communication board (AAC)” and pick a tab — then the word also appears as a tile on the AAC board.
Words from “Words & images” appear in the word-image game once you have Premium (or an active trial). With Premium you can also check “Also on communication board (AAC)” when adding or editing — then the word appears as a tile on the AAC board too. The other way around, on a new AAC tile (with photo) you can check “Also in word game”. Without linking, game and AAC stay separate.
For a new or existing word, tap the image. You can take a photo, pick one from your gallery, or (with internet) search for an image. Tip: use recognizable photos from home — “grandpa”, the school bag, or a favorite toy often work better than generic clip art.
Yes — for custom words (prepare for free; recordings play in the word-image game with Premium). Under “Audio recordings” you can make two clips: the word itself (learn mode) and “Where is the …?” (game). Your recording takes priority over the default voice. On AAC you use phonetic pronunciation; recording is not available there.
Built-in words and AAC tiles use bundled audio or the app voice (offline too). For custom words you can optionally record your voice — used in the word-image game (Premium). On the AAC board you set phonetic pronunciation; the first time needs internet. Speech speed: parent panel → Settings → Speech.
