What is a web app?

A web app is an app you open in the browser — without an app store. That is how TWIYO works on tablet, phone, and computer.

Many people think of an app as something from the App Store or Google Play. A web app works differently: you open it in the browser, through an ordinary website. For TWIYO that is twiyo.app. You can then add it to your home screen so it feels like a regular app — with an icon, without the address bar.

Technically this is often called a Progressive Web App (PWA). That means: the app runs in the browser, can work offline after the first visit, and updates automatically. You do not need a separate download per phone brand, and you are not dependent on store approval.

Why does that help for communication aids? Because you want to start quickly. No waiting for an install package, no special hardware required. A smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer with a browser is enough. For TWIYO a touchscreen is preferred, but the web app itself works on almost any existing device.

The main difference from a website is how you use it. You often browse a website briefly; you use a web app as a tool. TWIYO stores personal content — such as your own photos and words — locally on your device. That way you can practise and communicate even when the internet drops for a while.

In short: a web app is an app through the browser. No app store needed, an icon on your home screen, and updates arrive automatically. Want to use TWIYO this way? Open twiyo.app, follow the steps for your device, and add the app to your home screen. More help is in the guide at twiyo.app/en/guide.
