App status June 2026: TWIYO for aided communication and language development

TWIYO is on version 1.3.1 in June 2026. For everyone who cannot or struggles to speak: what you can do — word games, communication board (AAC), speller, counting, and alphabet — and what is new since the official launch.

Since our official launch in early June, TWIYO has been running stably on version 1.3.1. This post is an overview for parents, caregivers, care providers, and professionals: who TWIYO is for, what you can actually do with it, and which improvements we have shipped since launch.

TWIYO is an affordable, privacy-friendly app for everyone who cannot or struggles to speak — regardless of cause. Whether you use little spoken language because of autism, speech-language difficulties, aphasia, a neurological condition, or another challenge in speech and language: TWIYO helps you communicate and learn with pictures. Many families use it for children and young people; adults can use TWIYO just as well. You use your own tablet or phone — no expensive dedicated speech device and no app store download. Photos, word lists, and settings stay on the device.

For free you can start right away with letters, counting, and the alphabet. You can also manage up to 25 custom words with photos and voice — useful for practicing at home between speech therapy sessions. With Premium (or the free 14-day trial) you get the word-image game, a digital communication board for aided communication (AAC), the speller, progress insights, and unlimited custom content.

The word game helps children recognize words and link them to pictures: first in learn mode (“this is a …”), then in the game (“where is the …?”). Six themes are ready — animals, food, nature, at home, instruments, and colors — and you can add custom words that fit your daily life: “grandpa”, “school”, or a favorite stuffed animal.

The communication board is TWIYO’s AAC feature: a digital board with pictograms and core words so a child can build sentences and have them spoken aloud. Categories such as “I want”, “I feel”, “people”, and “yes/no/help” align with what many speech therapists and schools use. Since version 1.3.1 you can link words from the word game to the communication board — one photo, one display name, one phonetic pronunciation, synced in both places. That saves parents duplicate work and keeps materials consistent.

Parents manage everything in the parent panel (gear + PIN): turn categories on or off, reorder tabs, set phonetic pronunciation, and use one consistent child-friendly voice with adjustable speed. You can add new AAC tiles with a photo from camera, gallery, or online search — with phonetic typing instead of a separate recording per tile. Everything sounds the same and stays calm, including offline.

Beyond communication and learning words, TWIYO offers counting (how many?, matching, learning numbers) and alphabet activities (recognition, sounds, first letter). The speller lets children build words letter by letter — with a switch for uppercase and lowercase. Helpful if you also use a physical letter board at home or school.

Since launch we have improved audio reliability (fewer overlapping voices), added a Premium welcome email, secure sign-in and subscription linking via Stripe, and aligned the user guide with the app. New in 1.3.1: word game ↔ AAC linking, improved AAC tiles (labels, online search for new tiles), and a support chat on the website with answers from our FAQ.

TWIYO is a Progressive Web App: open twiyo.app in the browser and add it to your home screen. Much content then works offline — in the car, at school, or at speech therapy. Want to start gently? Try letters and counting first, read the step-by-step guide at twiyo.app/guide, or try Premium free for 14 days to test the word game, communication board, and speller. Questions? Use the chat on the website or the contact form. We would love to hear how it works for you.
